The newly elected Speaker of the 11th Parliament Anita Annet Among has rejected the office of her predecessor Jacob Oulanyah.
The Parliament’s director of pubic and Corporate affairs Chris Obore told Daily Monitor that there is no provision in Administration of Parliament on where the Speaker should sit
“The deputy Speaker is going to sit on the sixth floor and the Speaker remains in her former office [on 5th floor]. There is no provision in the Administration of Parliament Act where a Speaker should sit.” Said Obore
He added,
“Office space at Parliament is allocated by the sergeant-at-arms; it is just space [and] it is still within Parliament. She (Among) has just preferred to remain in her office. She is settled in her office. You want her to start moving her things again?” Obore stated
Among was overwhelmingly voted Speaker of Parliament last week replacing deceased Jacob Oulanyah. She defeated Asuman Basalirwa after garnering 401 votes against 66.
Meanwhile, the body of former Speaker Oulanyah will arrive in the country on Friday, 1st April. He died on Sunday 20th, March at the University of Washington Medical center in the USA.
