Seven time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has missed out on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist for the first time since 2005.
The Paris Saint Germain forward won the famous accolade last year and has been among the nominees since 2006.
He has featured in the top three since 2007 with the exception of 2018.
Last season, Messi scored 11 goals for PSG. His teammate at the Paris side Neymar also misses on the list, the Brazilian scored 13 goals in 28 matches.
Meanwhile, Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been nominated for the 2022 Ballon d’Or for an 18th time.
Real Madrid talisman Karim Benzema is the favourite for this year’s title after a tremendous 2021/22 season in which he scored 44 goals in 46 appearances.
He led Real to a Cup double and finished as the La Liga and Champions league top scorer.
The winner will be crowned at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on October 17 in Paris.
