Saudi Arabia announce national holiday after shock World Cup win over Argentina.

Saudi Arabia have given everyone in the country Wednesday off to celebrate the national team’s surprise victory over Argentina.

This isn’t the first time a public holiday has been declared after a World Cup win. Cameroon’s stellar performance against Argentina in the opening match of 1990’s tournament often referred to as one of the biggest upsets in football history also saw a holiday declared in Cameroon the very next day.

Ranked 51st in the world, Saudi Arabia came from a goal down to beat a star-studded Argentina side 2-1 on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi had given the South American side the lead from the penalty spot in the first period.

Hervé Renard’s side levelled matters early in the second half through Saleh Al-Shehri’s low effort before Salem Al Dawsari fired them ahead moments later.

Argentina came into the tournament among the favourites, on the back of a 36 game unbeaten run that included winning the 2021 Copa America.
