The head of National Unity Platform (NUP) party legal department, Anthony Wameli has lost his battle for cancer.

The development was confirmed by NUP party Principal Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine on Wednesday afternoon.

“Very sad day! Just learnt of the untimely passing of our dear brother and Head of our Legal Team, comrade Wamelie Anthony from the U.S. where he’s been admitted for treatment. Details will be provided in due course. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Bobi Wine tweeted.

Wameli was in 2021 admitted to St. Anthony medical center in Kasangati, Wakiso district due to stomach related complications.

In June 2021, he was flown out of the country to the Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts in the United States of America for further medication and it’s where he has died from.

The former Namisindwa County MP contestant was in September 2021 named the criminal defense lawyer of the year by the Uganda Law Society.

Wameli was a pastor at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya and rose to the limelight in 2017 when he represented suspects accused of killing former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

He also represented former presidential candidate Gen Henry Tumukunde.

Wameli was one of Mr Kyagulanyi’s lawyers when the former presidential candidate filed a petition at the Supreme Court seeking nullification of President Museveni’s victory following the January 14, 2021 polls.

He is the founder and managing partner of Wameli & Co. Advocates which employs eight advocates but has nurtured more than 300 advocates.
