UPDF soldier found dead at Queen Elizabeth National Park

Police in Rukungiri district are investigating the sudden death of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer who was found lying lifeless inside the Queen Elizabeth National Park over the weekend.

The deceased has been identified as Private Ndyanabo Patrick, 32, a UPDF No RA 222890, resident of Ncwera barracks, founRwenshama parish, Bwambara Sub-county of Rukungiri district.

Police Spokesperson in Kigezi Region, ASP Elly Maate, says that on 25th February 2023, the deceased left the barracks and went to Rwenshama trading/land site for unknown reasons.

On his way back at around 4am on 26th February 2023, Ndyanabo is alleged to have come across wild animals inside the Queen Elizabeth National park which eventually claimed his life.

On Sunday, morning, a boda boda rider coming from Rwenshama, passed by Ncwera barracks and informed the barracks administration that he had seen an unidentified dead body lying alongside the road in the park.

The UPDF intelligence officer then sent a team of soldiers to the scene who identified the deceased as their fellow officer private Ndyanabo Patrick.

Police were then informed, visited, examined and documented the scene together with UWA and UPDF Officers.

The body was handed over to the UPDF Officers after a postmortem for further arrangements. Police has however opened up a case about the sudden death at Rukungiri Central Police station vide reference number DEF 001/2023.
