Man killed over hen theft

Police in Kanungu has arrested four people who are suspected of involving in the beating to death of a 20-year-old man.

The four suspects are accused of beating Derrick Orikiriza for stealing a hen belonging to a fellow resident of Buhamba village, Rutugunda parish, and Kirima sub-county, identified as Joy.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, a case of murder by the mob, Kanungu CRB 261/2023, has been opened up as investigations continue.

The names of the suspects who were arrested are yet to be revealed since the Police is still making further investigations and that this would jeopardize their work.

Maate said one of the residents, Hope Monday, 45, on Thursday, made a report to Kanungu Police, indicating that at about 10:30 am, the deceased was allegedly found with a stolen hen.

Maate also stated that when Joy pinned Orikiriza over the alleged theft, the residents started beating him until he died.

Orikiriza’s body was found abandoned the on the road to Kitariro Health Centre III covered with a blanket brought by one of his parents.

The Police visited the scene and took the body to Kanungu Health Centre IV for a post-mortem, from where it was handed over to relatives for burial.
