Gad Niyinzima, a 56-year-old resident of Gatwe Cell in Bunagana town council, was convicted of murder.

The prosecution claimed that on 2nd January 2020, Niyonzima killed his wife, Nyiransekuye Pophia, by using a garden hoe to cut off her head.

Kabale High Court Resident Judge, Justice Samuel Emokor, presided High Court in Kisoro

During his defense on 21st June of this year, the 56 year old Niyonzima denied the allegations against him, claiming that he only recalls being attacked in his home by assailants.

Niyonzima also revealed that he might have unintentionally cut his wife while defending his family from the attackers.

However, Resident Judge Justice Emokor declared that the evidence presented in court indicated Niyonzima’s guilt in killing his wife, in violation of sections 188 and 189 of the penal code act.

The state prosecutor asked the court to sentence the convict to life imprisonment so that he can be kept away from the community and serve as an example to others who may contemplate committing such crimes.

In contrast, the convict’s lawyer, Nabasa Rodgers, requested that the court be lenient in punishing his client, citing Niyonzima’s ability to provide assistance to members of the community and his responsibilities towards his family and children.

The Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Emokor, ordered that the convict be remanded until 3rd July this year when he will appear before the same court for judgment.
