Cheptegei ruled out of 5000m race

Man Jose Kayima

Joshua Cheptegei’s dream of becoming a double world champion at the 2023 World Athletics Championship has been crushed.

Reports from Hungary say Cheptegei suffered a toe injury
that will keep him out of this year’s
5000 meters.

The news is a big blow to Cheptegei
who showed class in decimating a
world class field in the men’s 10,000m
final on Sunday.

Cheptegei is reportedly out of Hungary
and is expected to have arrived in
Uganda any time.

Meanwhile, Oscar Chelimo a bronze medalist at the Oregon Worlds last year will be in Heat Two of the 5000m at 8PM tonight.

Chelimo faces some of the sport’s best
including Ethiopian Berihu Aregawi,
Jacob Krop, Canadian Mohammed
Katir, the experienced Yomif Kejelcha
and Norway’s Henrik Ingebrigsten.
But if the Ugandan 21-year-old
athlete can match his personal best
time of 13.00.42 while minding the
technicalities of the race.
