Police have started the hunt for a group of panga-wielding assailants who attacked the home of former Kawempe South Division MP Mubarak Munyagwa in Kimbejja, Cell, Buddo ward in Kyengera town council.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident happened at around 3am in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

“A swift response led by the Division Police Commander prevented the assailants from gaining access to Hon Munyagwa’s home. The timely reporting by Hon Munyagwa and the rapid response of the police team on patrol played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of life and property,” Owoyesigyire said.

Thanks to the swift response from the Nsangi Territorial Police, led by the Division Police Commander, the assailants were unable to gain access to the prominent politician’s home, thus ensuring the safety of both residents and property.

Luk Owoyesigyire commended Munyagwa for promptly reporting the incident, which played a crucial role in thwarting the robbery attempt.

He, however, noted that during the incident, the security guard at Munyagwa’s home, Benjamin Mpaka, sustained a head injury from a sharp object and was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

“The police team introduced K9 units to the scene, although their efforts were hindered by heavy rain downpours. Despite the challenging weather conditions, one suspect attempting to flee the scene in a Datsun pick-up with registration number UAK 182A was apprehended. The suspect is currently in custody, aiding ongoing police investigations,”Owoyesigyire said.

He however dismissed as untrue, social media reports that there was any shooting during the incident, noting that the assailants were armed only with sharp objects.

“We commend Mubarak Munyagwa for promptly reporting the incident, enabling the police to respond effectively and prevent further harm.”
