The National Unity Platform (NUP) has lodged a formal protest against what they claim was an attempted raid on their party headquarters by police and other security agencies.

The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday evening, January 14, 2024, at the NUP offices in Makerere Kavule, Kampala.

police denies the allegations, prompting NUP to seek an explanation from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Martin Okoth Ochola.

According to eyewitnesses, men and women in uniform, suspected to be officers of the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies, arrived at the NUP offices aboard a Toyota Hiace (locally referred to as a drone) at 7:00 pm.

The officers are said to have surrounded the premises before attempting to break in. However, the onsite security noticed their presence, prompting the locking of all doors, and the officers reportedly fled.

The incident raised concerns in the neighboring community as residents noticed the attempted intrusion.

NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, expressed bitterness about the alleged raid and announced plans to formally protest by writing a letter to IGP Martin Okoth Ochola.

“We protest the actions of police and other security agencies. We seek an explanation from the IGP,” asserted Rubongoya.

This is not the first time NUP offices in Kampala have faced such incidents.

Police are not aware of any attempted raid at NUP. We have checked, and no complaints have been filed for us to follow.”

The conflicting narratives surrounding the alleged incident highlight the tensions between NUP and security agencies, with the party insisting on its legal status and the right to conduct political activities without interference.
