Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga has revealed that a prisoner was shot dead at Magistrates court in Jinja. He confirmed the development while addressing the media today, 19th February, 2024 at Police headquarters, Naguru, Kampala.

Enanga identified the deceased as, Abel Mwanika a.k.a Abusale saying on Friday, 15th February, 2024, Mwanika with his co-accused, Ashraf Ssenoga a.k.a Vampire attempted to escape from Jinja Magistrate’s Court.

The pair was appearing before the Grade One Magistrate, Anxious Atumanya for the fourth time following their arrest in December, 2023 on allegations of aggravated robbery.

However, the Grade One Magistrate declined to hear their case saying it was Capital in nature and could only be heard by the High Court. The pair was then returned to the Holding Cell within Court waiting to be transported back to Kirinya Prison.

However, before reaching the Holding Cell, the pair that was handcuffed together broke off and ran towards the Court’s gate in an escape attempt.

This prompted the Prison Guards to discharge live bullets that critically injured Mwanika. His colleague, Ssenoga was re-arrested without any injury.

Enanga says Mwanika succumbed to the bullet injuries at Jinja Referral Hospital.
