Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has declared William Samoei Ruto as the 5th Kenyan President.

Wafula Chebukati, the chairperson IEBC declared Kenyan Deputy President Ruto as the winner on the evening of Monday, 15th August at Bomas.

But before the declaration, four commissioners of Kenya’s electoral body earlier held a press conference and disowned the results.

“We are not at Bomas because we cannot take ownership of the results,” IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera said.

Ruto beat former Kenyan Prime Minister and five time contender Raila Odinga in the race to succeed two term President Uhuru Kenyatta.

More than 14million Kenyans turned out for the election that was held on Tuesday, 9th August.

50.49 per cent (7.18 million) of the 14million Kenyans voted for Ruto in the decisive poll while about 6.94 million (48.5 per cent) polled for Odinga.

Ruto’s victory halts the ascendency of the Kenyatta-Odinga families since 1964 in the East African powerhouse.

Odinga’s Azimio will take control of Kenya’s Parliament after edging Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance with 162-159 in the house that comprises 349 seats.
