Uganda’s long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei is likely to miss the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham due to a harmstring sustained at the 2022 Oregon Worlds.

Cheptegei who is currently in the country did not confirm whether he will take part in the competition but called upon for prayers from Ugandans

“For now, I cannot confirm the news, the best is for me to recover. Like I said it’s now all down am still a work in progress and I ask Ugandans to pray for since it’s been one of my dream to defend one of the Commonwealth titles.” But if am doing it for the sake of long-term goals then it’s good. I have trust in the team in Birmingham and I believe they can defend us.”

The multiple 10000m World champion also called upon the government to put more emphasis and support on improving Sports infrastructure in the country

“For us to be competing with the boys there we must really match them up with facilities. My request to the government is it should put much emphasis and support in infrastructure since the sports industry is so huge and has helped in fighting unemployment in the country.” Cheptegei told New Vision

Cheptegei won the 5000m and 10000m double in Gold Coast, Australia four years ago. He was due to defend his 5000m Commonwealth title on August 6th.
