In a heartbreaking turn of events, SuperSport United goalkeeper George Chogova passed away at the age of 32.

Chigova faced a health setback in July of this year when he suffered a heart attack, forcing him to step away from the field until his unfortunate demise this Wednesday. Prior to his time in South Africa, Chigova showcased his goalkeeping skills competing in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League with Dynamos Football Club. He also played for the Zimbabwe senior men’s national team.

During his tenure in South Africa, Chigova had notable spells with Polokwane City and was on SuperSport United’s payroll until his untimely passing.

Following Chigova’s heart attack, SuperSport United brought in another talented Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Washington Arubi, to fill the void.

Late last month, Chigova shared Matthew 7 vs 7 on his Facebook page, sparking speculation that he was gearing up for a comeback after an extended period on the sidelines.

Chigova initially joined SuperSport United in 2014, transitioning from local Premiership former champions Dynamos. However, due to a lack of game time, he made a move to Polokwane City. After a five-year stint with City, who had been relegated from South Africa’s elite football league, Chigova returned to SuperSport United.

In 2018, Chigova garnered attention for his outstanding performances at the Cosafa Cup, where his heroic penalty saves played a crucial role in Zimbabwe reaching the final.

Tragically, Chigova’s passing follows closely on the heels of the recent demise of former national team player and head coach Rahman Gumbo, adding another layer of sorrow to the football community.
